PRE-ACTIVITIES

PREPARATION ACTIVITIES BEFORE THE TRAINING-

Participants had to identify the needs and the problem, as to why environmental locations are not accessible, or diverse and inclusive in their country. Have they ever thought of how a public environmental location could become more accessible? Could they think of locations that are accessible? What do they do right? Accordingly, what do inaccessible locations do wrong?

They then had to present them in the Training:

We chose Samuel's Fortress in Ohrid as the topic of our homework activity for the REDIEL project "Re-establish Diversity and Inclusion in Environmental Activity" primarily because all team members come from Ohrid.

With the current progress of technology and urban development, almost each part of the country has been modified by a human factor in a way. We had a long list of places to discuss for this topic, but we decided to choose a local place since we could provide more details about it, more specifically about how it used to be, which measures were taken to improve the place and its surroundings, and what are its greatest flaws.

All of us had several suggestions for the topic of our homework and after discussing each option, we decided to focus on Samuel's Fortress, which is located in the old town of Ohrid. This historical monument has both advantages and disadvantages in terms of accessibility for people with disabilities and people of different ages/genders.

In 2000, conservation and restoration works started and the walls and towers of the fortress were repaired, preserved and restored. Our next step was touring the place and noting all the changes, drawbacks, and solutions that have been implemented in the last 2 decades.

We compared how the fortress used to look like before and how it looks like now. On one hand, we listed all the positive changes that have been made and that make the fortress easily accessible for people with disabilities, and people of different ages/genders. On the other hand, we listed all the disadvantages to the place, i.e., all the obstacles and flaws that make it unsafe and inaccessible.

Finally, we listed several suggestions for improving this place and making it safer and more accessible to everyone.
